Sometimes, I miss K-Mart

For me, furnishing a house in Australia usually involves a few trips to the op-shop a visit to K-mart, and a trip to mum and dads spare cupboard. Sorted.

Unfortunately, here in the land of far far away, department stores don't exist, there is a Mr fix-it on every corner so nobody gives things away, and with 150 million people in two thirds the size of Victoria -things are just a little bit crazy.

Yep,  furnishing our apartment this week in Chittagong was hard work! But I did get to experience half the city by traipsing between  the ceiling fan market, the curtain street and the cane furtiture shopping strip! In a country of crazy disorder, they sure like to keep their markets segregated and organised!

In the third mattress shop in foam market street it all became a little too much. Glenna, Katie and I  just wanted to find something to sleep on!

We motioned to the shop keeper for him to lay the mattress flat so we could try it out, but in the super skinny shopfronts here, it didn't fit. So instead of just laying flat the comparable single bed size mattress that would have fit, the shopkeeper took the mattress and lay it OUT IN THE STREET for us to test out laying down! Really? Yep!

By then I had had it with mattress shopping and gave in! White girl lays on mattress in the street while laughing histerically. Free entertainment for all!

So my coping mechanism for Bangladeshi house furnishing is just going with the flow and a a good belly laugh!

Besides, the flouresent-lit aisles of K-Mart can't provide you with this kind of entertainment! ;)

  1. You crack me up!!! :) Looks mental, if a bit exasperating, but a good story hehe Looks incredible Bridgo, I can't believe you're actually there - feels like you should still be down on the south island. Looks like it's already living up to adventurous expectations though, so that's all you can ask for, really, isn't it? Love you to bits and thank you for all your encouragement this week - aren't you a good friend thinking about budget day in the midst of Bangladesh!! Keep shining :), Anna xox
